Cocktail Hour: Ginger Infused Cocktails

July 25, 2014

Inspired by our most recent trip to Vietnam, we’re sipping on ginger infused cocktails to beat the summer heat. Trays aren’t just for tea anymore, and we’re serving up our spicy cocktails on brass and silver trays that we found on our travels. Cheers to some seriously sophisticated summer parties.

First things first, it is time to learn how to make ginger syrup.

Ginger Syrup

½ cup sugar
½ cup water
½ lb fresh ginger root, peeled and grated

In a small pan bring the sugar, water and ginger to a boil. Turn off the heat and allow to steep and cool for one hour. Strain off the ginger pieces and pour into a fancy bottle.

It is super easy to make but, if you’re lazy like us, you might want to try Morris Kitchen’s ginger syrup.

Here are some of our favorite ginger cocktail recipes.

(1) Bourbon and Ginger

3 parts bourbon
1 tbsp. ginger syrup
2 parts soda water

Fill a tall glass with ice. Add bourbon, ginger syrup and stir. Add soda water. Stir gently and garnish with candied ginger. Serve on a silver tray.

(2) Dark and Stormy

1 tbsp ginger syrup
2 parts dark rum
1 part lime juice
3 parts seltzer

Fill a tall glass with ice, add seltzer, lime juice and ginger syrup. Then add the rum and stir gently. Garnish with candied ginger and lime. Serve on a brass tray.

(3) Ginger Side Car

This recipe is from Domaine de Canton, a ginger liqueur made from baby ginger grown in Vietnam. No ginger syrup required for this one!

1 part Domaine de Canton
1 part cognac
Squeeze juice of a lemon wedge and serve in a chilled martini glass.

Serve in a martini glass on a silver tray. Sip while reading about the hunt for elusive and prized baby ginger in the mountains of Vietnam in Departures Magazine.

(4) Ginger Rose and Black Tea Cocktail

This recipe is from one of our favorite food blogs, A Better Happier St. Sebastian and uses Domaine de Canton as well.

1 part rose simple syrup
2 part ginger liqueur
4 part double concentrate black tea
sparkling water to top

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the simple syrup, ginger liqueur and black tea. Stir until thoroughly chilled. Strain into a glass and top with sparkling water. Serve with a lemon wedge on a silver tray.
