A retablo (which literally means “behind the altar”) is a small painting of a particular saint, offered either in thanks for their help, or in the hopes that help will be given soon. Home altars, churches, and sanctuaries throughout Mexico are adorned with the icons, which became especially popular during the 19th century. We purchased these intriguing vintage examples from an old gentleman in the market of Tlacolula.

The custom of retablos arrived in Mexico the same way the Catholic saints did—with the Spanish. Not too different from pre-existing indigenous practices of making offerings to the gods, retablos became popular first amongst the rich, who had them painted on canvas, and then, when cheaper materials became available, amongst all levels of society. The art of retablos has influenced a large number of Mexican artists including Roberto Montenegro, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Frida Kahlo, and Diego Rivera, who was one of the first to start collecting them.
