Afoakwa Mpoankron literally means “Afoakwa’s nine-tuft haircut.” In this case, the name Afoakwa is used as a stand-in for all royal functionaries and guards, who, in a display of loyalty to the Asantehene, traditionally wore a special haircut. Designed in honor of those neatly-coiffed aides, the cloth symbolizes loyalty security, and service.
