A symbol of fertility in ancient Persia (and, for that matter, many other cultures), the pomegranate tree is held in high esteem in Uzbekistan, where it is one of the most popular motifs you see on everything from ceramics to suzanis. These exquisitely-detailed miniatures were hand-painted on silk paper by a young man named Ulmasa, who started his training at the age of ten. There’s a long tradition of miniature-painting in Uzbekistan, where it managed to survive just under the radar of religious authorities, who generally weren’t too down with representational art.
