The Black Dao like the Red Dao (also known as Yao) trace their roots back two thousand years to the Hunan Province in China. The Black Dao along with the Hmong tribe, both ethnic minorities in China are known for bravely fighting against Chinese oppression during the Ming dynasty in the 14th and 15th centuries. Like the Red Dao, many eventually immigrated to the Northern hills of Vietnam.
