When Shankar Narayan returns home after a long absence, he finds that his father, a former businessman, and (more recently) ex-con, has duped an entire town into believing that he’s an oracle by using a few magic tricks he learned in the slammer. Determined to expose the man, Narayan hires a magician named Goga to outsoothe the soothsayer. Once Goga succeeds, however, he is loath to tell everyone that his divine powers are mere magic tricks, too. Much false prophecy and epic sleight-of-hand ensue in Prakash Mehra’s 1989 film Jaadugar, or Magician, starring the legendary Amitabh Bachchan.
