You can practically hear the clank of weaponry in this elaborate, high-relief carving, painted with traditional reds and golds. Panels like this one were used to increase ventilation in the homes of Peranakans, the descendents of Chinese merchants who started arriving in Malaysia in the 15th century. The combination of European, Chinese, and Malay elements represented here is the signature of what’s called the “Straits Eclectic” style of architecture.
