Destination: Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley is famous for its ceramics, and the city of Rishtan, where potters make up nearly a tenth of the population, is perhaps the region’s oldest and most celebrated ceramics center. Known for their blue hues—a spectrum that ranges from cobalt to turquoise—Rishtan ceramics have been in high demand since the days of the Silk Road. This platter was made in Rishtan by master potter Rustam Usmanov, whose studio we had the privilege of visiting.
