Meet Ruslan, Master Craftsman, Rustam Usmanav's nephew. It takes Ruslan about 25 hours paint a large platter like this and fittingly in a country that’s such and amalgam of old and new, Ruslan practices this ancient art while listening to Russian rap on his iPod.

Destination: Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s Fergana Valley is famous for its ceramics, and the city of Rishtan, where potters make up nearly a tenth of the population, is perhaps the region’s oldest and most celebrated ceramics center. Known for their blue hues—a spectrum that ranges from cobalt to turquoise—Rishtan ceramics have been in high demand since the days of the Silk Road. This plate was made in Rishtan by master potter Rustam Usmanov, whose studio we had the privilege of visiting.
