Delicate gilt-silver hairpins like these were once a wardrobe staple amongst Nyonyas, the female members of the Baba-Nyonya, or descendants of the Chinese merchants that began arriving in Malaysia as early at the 15th century. We named this trio after the teratai, or “lotus” flower, which features prominently in Southeast Asian mythology.
