We love the calligraphic nature of this graceful miniature, hand-painted by a young man named Ulmasa, who started his training at the age of ten. There’s a long tradition of miniature-painting in Uzbekistan, where it managed to survive just under the radar of religious authorities, who considered artistic representations of living things sacrilegious.
