• One of the most storied uprisings is the Aymara leader Tupac Katari’s 184-day siege of La Paz in 1781, during which his wife, Bartolina Sisa, acted as commander. The two were captured and executed, but their heroism has inspired generations of indigenous people, many of whom call themselves Katarismo.
