• Woodblock printing in India

Woodblock printing on textiles dates back thousands of years and is the earliest form of incorporating patterns on fabric. Woodblocks are carved from a variety of woods such as rosewood and teak. There are master wood carvers in Jaipur and the villages nearby who have followed in the trade of their fathers and grandfathers. After preparing the wood to the right size, a pattern is traced and the carving begins. A separate block is made for each color of a design, and it takes days to make one intricate block.
